The Facts

By stopping the virus' polymerase enzyme, we can stop the HSV-1 virus from making DNA and refrain it from multiplying. This makes your cold sore flare-ups less painful.

What about Genitalia?

Even though this antiviral medication can be prescribed for Genital Herpes, our treatment plan is only for HSV-1 Oral Herpes.

Questions frequently posed about valacyclovir

Herpes simplex virus is classified into two subtypes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Cold sores are blisters typically located on or around the mouth. Additionally known as fever lesions and oral herpes.

Valacyclovir is an FDA-approved antiviral suppressant for treating herpes simplex, which is classified as HSV-1 and HSV-2. Valacyclovir functions by inhibiting the polymerase enzyme of the virus. Thus, the medication can prevent the herpes simplex virus from producing DNA and replicating. This decreases the severity of your cold sores and outbreaks, as well as the virus's ability to spread between hosts. Valacyclovir's active ingredient is valacyclovir hydrochloride.

Valacyclovir is utilized to treat herpes zoster, herpes genitalis, and cold sores. It reduces pain and itching, aids in the healing of sores, and prevents new sores from developing, but does not cure herpes infections.

The typical dose of valacyclovir for treating cold sores in adults is 2,000 mg, followed by a second dose of 2,000 mg 12 hours later.

After taking Valacyclovir orally, it quickly gets absorbed into the digestive system and is almost entirely converted into acyclovir and L-valine. In patients with normal renal function, the half-life of acyclovir is between 2.5 and 3.3 hours. This means that between 2.5 and 3.3 hours after taking a dose of valacyclovir, approximately 50 percent of the active constituent will still be present in the blood.

When Valacyclovir is consumed within 48 hours of the onset of the first symptoms it may help alleviate symptoms within two to three days.

When prescribed by a doctor, Valacyclovir is typically well-tolerated. Headache, vertigo, nausea, abdominal pain, or vomiting are possible adverse effects. It is essential to remain hydrated while taking valacyclovir to prevent these side effects. Please consult your doctor if any of these adverse effects persist or worsen.
